For those of you who have been wondering about our fall ticketed events, it turns out that this year they are all falling later in the year. I'm happy to announce our first ticketed event of fall.
It's Patrick Rothfuss, the beloved writer of the Kingkiller Chronicles!d Since we've been open, one of the most frequent questions we've received has been "When are you going to host Patrick Rothfuss?" And since then we've been almost teased by the various visiting writers who've been friends with him. John Scalzi put in a good word. So did Brandon Sanderson. He's even interviewed two-time visitor Mary Robinette Kowal on his blog.
And now, with the release of his novella, with the help of several of our good friends at Penguin Random House (thanks to all of you!), we can now present...
A Ticketed Event with Patrick Rothfuss, author of The Name of the Wind* and The Wise Man's Fear, plus the newly released The Slow Regard of Silent Things,
Friday October 31, at 7:00 pm at the UWM Union Ballroom, located 2200 East Kenwood Avenue in Milwaukee. Note that linking to the book here is for you to get more info or to be a signed copy. To buy a ticket to our event, you must use the Brown Paper Ticket site.
Rothfuss's newest follows Auri, one of The Kingkiller Chronicle’s most enigmatic characters. Full of secrets and mysteries, The Slow Regard of Silent Things is the story of a broken girl trying to live in a broken world. Tickets are $22 (includes all taxes and fees), include admission for one and a signed hardcover copy of The Slow Regard of Silent Things, and are available through Brown Paper Tickets.
This event is co-sponsored by the UWM Bookstore, where tickets are also available. UWM students, faculty, and staff qualify for discounted tickets, but note that UWM ID is required. There is no gift card option for this event, but a signed copy makes a great holiday gift.
A little about the new book: "Deep below the University, there is a dark place. Few people know of it: a broken web of ancient passageways and abandoned rooms. A young woman lives there, tucked among the sprawling tunnels of the Underthing, snug in the heart of this forgotten place. Her name is Auri, and she is full of mysteries. The Slow Regard of Silent Things is a brief, bittersweet glimpse of Auri’s life, a small adventure all her own. At once joyous and haunting, this story offers a chance to see the world through Auri’s eyes."
"It is a rare and great pleasure to find a fantasist writing...with true music in the words...Wherever Pat Rothfuss goes...he'll carry us with him as a good singer carries us through a song." —Ursula K. LeGuin
Yesterday Patrick Rothfuss's blog went up with his event schedule, which is probably why our ticket sales popped yesterday. Silly me, I thought it was because of our email newsletter.
We may or may not have tickets available at the door, so I would suggest buying your tickets now if you are planning to attend. Patrick Rothfuss had 600 people at his Seattle event on his last tour. Now I ask you, Milwaukee, do you want to be shown up by Seattle...again?
I also want to note that while the price of our ticket seems higher than some venues, we are including all taxes and service fees in our pricing, making our pricing very competitive with the other markets. But if for some godforsaken reason you think there's some better way to spend Halloween than to see Patrick Rothfuss (who are you, anyway?), he'll also be at the Old Orchard Barnes and Noble on Sunday, November 2, 3 pm.
See you there! And good luck to that fan who wants Rothfuss to travel to Brazil on tour.
*Yes, my brain freeze caused a synapse and led me to write Shadow of the Wind, which of course is Carol Ruiz Zafron's novel.
